Arts and Crafts Lamps and The History of Art Nouveau
The Arts and Crafts era began in England during the late 1800's. Simple clean designs and individual craftsmanship that employed aspects of nature were the main characteristics of this design period. This new movement was in direct contrast to the mass production of products that was made possible by the industrial revolution. This new art, (Art Nouveau in French) was also many ways a relief from the lavishly ornate designs of the Victorian era which preceded. The industrial revolution had dehumanized the process of manufacturing especially as it relates to home decor products. It broke down the work process into various components by processes called the "division of labor". Workers were able to...
Have Fun Swapping Things
It is only natural that after a while you get tired of some of the things you own and start to believe that they take up too much space in your home. You might consider selling them, but when you start to think about a garage sale and organizing it, you give up the idea and simply decide to throw those things away. This is a shame and not only do you have nothing to gain, but you actually might be throwing away something that another person would like. Maybe that piece of clothing or that DVD is not to your liking anymore, but there is a big change somebody else on the other side of the world would actually "die " for it. So, here is an idea: why not swap what you have for something else? If you...

FFD - Flying Flotation Device
A proposal has been put forth to build a small floatable UAV Unmanned Aerical Vehicle concept to save drowning victims. The FFD - Flying Flotation Device as we call it, would be flown out to those in need and they would use it as a way to keep from drowning until rescue personnel could come and help them. So far we have put a model together puffy design with model airplane engine to see how steer able it is, the aerodynamic issues appear to be the easiest part and not a problem. All the other components are available, GPS, servos, chip, canister inflation used on Navy Seal rafts once it gets there. This will be a complete life saver in military or civilian use. We have even gone so far as to design...

The Beauty of Bamboo
Bamboo floors, clothing, furniture, even towels! If you haven't heard the bamboo buzz by now, you have to wonder where you've been. This fast growing grass (one of fastest growing plants on the planet, in fact) is being touted as the miracle material for its renew ability; its ability to resist mold, bugs and water; and its natural anti fungal and antibacterial properties. Found all around the world, there are about 1000 different species of bamboo growing in East Asia, northern Australia, India, Africa and from South Eastern America down to Argentina and Chile. Although American consumers are quickly developing an appetite for this versatile foliage, we're still way behind Asia where the plant is...
Storage Building Sheds its Old Image
Although things have always changed quickly, in the past few years, the pace has increased so significantly that "new" sayings are being invented every day. All of a sudden, "40 is the new 20," "60 is the new 40," and "80 is the new 60." Also, "bald is the new hairy," "fat is the new thin," "geeky is the new cool," and "left is the new right." As annoying as these sayings may be, they shed light on a "new" collective consciousness that's more flexible, and less inclined to cling to out-dated "rules" that have had little or no meaning for years - or centuries. This can be a good thing, because it's a sign of the erosion of stubborn stereotypes that have been inhibitive, as well as prohibitive...
The Personality Of Furniture
In our home we have constant expressions of ourselves and those who we live with. If you live alone, with a mate, or with your husband and your children we are in competition with each other. We all search for spaces in this confined home to be our own person. Fighting for this space can be difficult because sharing is not a natural part of who we are. * First there has to be a realization the mother and father have been there first. They have the priority. What they surround themselves with is expressing who they are. There furniture is chosen to meet their needs. * Bringing two people together from two different families can be a challenge in itself. Sometimes the things that come have deep...
Finding Pottery Online
There are many ways to find great pottery. While it is often best to see the pieces in living color, the Internet offers opportunities for those who do not have ready or easy access to great artisans in their town or who prefer a type of pottery that typically isn't carried locally to find the pieces they desire to add to their collections without traveling extensively in order to do so. There are a few drawbacks to ordering pottery online and one of those would be the fact that you are only seeing a very flat representation of the finished product. In other words, it is very difficult for a picture to recreate the drama that a certain piece of pottery may have. The colors cannot be relied upon as...
Antique China Repairs
Valuable antique pottery - such as Meissen, Sèvres and Chelsea (which date from the 18th century) - is too rare and delicate to be restored by anyone other than an expert. However, many other pieces of antique china, which probably have more charm than value, can be restored by anyone prepared to take the time. Wash china in warm soapy water, then rinse and dry. Most domestic stains can be shifted by, rubbing with bicarbonate of soda or common salt. Grease and dust collects in cracks. Bleach with cotton wool pads soaked in hydrogen peroxide. Coarse antique china is porous and often stains badly, but it can be cleaned by soaking for up to a week in neat domestic bleach. In some cases, old...
How to Dye your Own Yarn
Dying your own yarn is not difficult and can be fun! There are a lot of methods for dying, but the one I like best uses unsweetened drink mixes, such as Kool-Aid or Flavor-Aid and a microwave. You must use 100% wool yarn (or another protein fiber) for the color to take. I've used Fisherman's Wool with good results. To prepare the wool, make bundles of about two ounces each, tied with a short string. (I use yarn to tie my bundles, and then keep the ties on index cards with details on the yarn and amounts of mix I used for future reference. I experiment a lot!) Soak wool bundles in hot water with a squirt of liquid dish soap for ½ hour. While the bundles are soaking prepare your dye. You can use...

It is shill manufactured as originally designed, with art deco styling and comes a wide array of bold & bright colors. The Homer Laughlin China Company of Newell, West Virginia manufactured Fiesta dinnerware from the middle of the 1930s until 1973. After a hiatus of about 12 years, Fiesta was once again produced and is still being produced today in the colors which have become so popular and with the durability for which Fiesta is known. As an Italian, when I have to write in English or talk with one of my American Customers I am always uncertain: should I say Italian Pottery, Italian Ceramics or Italian Majolica? Once we know exactly what we are talking about, we will define what they really mean to people.CERAMICS Ceramic is the most general term. It is derived from the Greek word keramos, meaning "clay". Historically, ceramics were prepared by shaping...

Bookend Beginnings
Bookends are first and foremost an item of function. A bookend's only reason to exist is to be placed at the end of a row of books to keep it from falling over. While it is a simple concept, the history of bookends is wrapped within the very history of written language itself. Before books, knowledge and information was passed by word of mouth. The more the knowledge base of humans increased, the more the need for some way of keeping a record of things. Among the first 'books' known are clay tablets with marks made into the wet clay which was then fired in an oven like pottery. This was the first known written language, called Cuneiform Script, developed over 6,000 years ago. As innovative as these...

Get an Antique Look Without the Antique Price
With the exception of unfinished furniture, pretty much all of the solid wood and all-wood furniture on the market is treated or 'finished' in some way. Most of the woods used to manufacture furniture take stains and lacquers very well, meaning the color and texture can be altered greatly in the finishing process. The colors and tones described in our Wood Guide are rarely what you find on the market. For example, it is very common to find an oak dresser with a dark cherry finish or a pine bed with a rich walnut finish. It is also important to remember that these finishes can vary greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer. Company A's cherry finish might look like company B's rosewood and...
Enjoy Art
It's amazing how everyone sees things so very differently. Take artwork, for example. Everyone interprets a piece of artwork according to their own experience, and according to their own sets of rules and perceptions. What may seem like a fine detailed and colored portrait to one person may seem like an unbalanced and poorly organized piece to another. Artwork, like life, is a product of subjective experiences by which we judge things as they appear to be, to us. Sometimes, the only person who is pleased by a piece of art is the person who actually created it. Passers-by, critics with no real artwork skills, are usually the most derogatory. Perhaps it is because they can not create, themselves...
Greece and its Rich History of Palaces
The Age of the Palaces. The middle-Minoic era was the time of prosperity for Crete. Cities started to develop in the period between 2200 and 1450 BC, but they were huger blocks of palaces like the Syrians built them, rather than conglomerations of private houses. Examples of these palaces are Cnossus, Phaistos and Hagia Triada. The palace of Cnossus was spread out over two hectares, and counted so many rooms that it formed the basis for the famous myth about the labyrinth of the Minotaur. It seems that Crete has been a collection of local kingdoms, mostly subsidiary to the dominating Cnossus where the profits of the ruler were collected, managed and distributed. Remarkable are the huge storerooms...

How To Remove A Pot From A Batt
Pottery Batts or bats (either spelling is acceptable) are round covers that go over the head of a potter's wheel when throwing a pot or vase. It protects the wheelhead from getting gummed up with clay and can be removed, vase and all to allow the vase time to dry elsewhere should another project require the immediate use of the wheel. Originally these bats where made of wood or plaster and it can be very difficult to remove a dried vase or pot from one without damaging the unfired clay. Here are step-by-step instructions on how to safely remove a pot or vase from a bat. 1. Begin with the bat still firmly attached to the potter's wheel and the pot attached to the bat. The Spread of Pottery Styles
The Dutch not only exported dishes and other domestic wares they also exported the Dutch tiles to England and other European nations. Thus the making tiles became a separate branch of pottery making. And some of the important pottery making places was Hamburg, Frankfurt, Hanau and Bayreuth was outstanding centers. Bernard Palissy was one of the famous potters whose students spread his styles of pottery. Dutch tin-glazed pottery, known by the name of the town of Delft where it became established eventually, was made in great quantities and much was sent to England. Not only was there a big trade in dishes and other domestic wares, but Dutch tiles were sent also. These were of sufficient importance to...
Sgraffito Pottery
Sgraffito Pottery was once considered to be the vessels of kings. From the Byzantine emperors to the Russian czars, Sgraffito has been the earthenware for the "blue-bloods" of Europe's finest houses. Sgraffito Pottery is defined by the intricate designs that have been actually scratched into the surface of the clay before firing. This sort of pottery is often made with bold colors and coated with a lighter liquid clay for contrast. It is at this point that the designs are scratched into the pottery showing the base color underneath. This type of earth ware can be traced all the way back to the Sung Dynasty of China. Cross Tattoos - The Symbolic Meaning Of Religious Designs
Cross tattoos are a popular choice if you're looking for a design that's iconic and rich with symbolism. But the origin of the cross design is unknown. The cross is one of the oldest and most basic designs known to humans. It has been used to decorate all manner of things including pottery and cloth for as long as humans can remember. In ancient times the cross was used as part of the Aztec, Egyptian, Greek and Norse cultures for many centuries. The symbol of the cross was also used by various pagan religions that pre-date Christianity by thousands of years, and as a consequence cross tattoos are almost as old as the cross design itself. Eventually, due to the rise of Christianity and the cross...
Mclaren Denies "hamilton Error"
At the 2007 Brazilian Grand Prix, McLaren's Lewis Hamilton had the chance to become the first rookie to win the drivers' championship. A poor start and a gearbox problem though left him just one point shy of accomplishing the feat. Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen showed poise under pressure and went on to become the world champion even as he went into the race sitting on third place. The controversy of the recently-concluded Formula One season though still continues with reports that Hamilton caused the error which saw him relegated to 16th place on lap eight of the season finale. A Canadian publication La Presse reported that the young rookie inadvertently switched off his car on lap eight. Said...

Antique Prints And Maps Auctions
There is something inherently intriguing about ancient maps. As a child, most of us have played games where we have imagined that we had found a map giving the location of hidden treasure. If only it were true! This may be one of the reasons that many people have a fascination for antique maps. The physical characteristics of the world may not have changed remarkably since map making began, but the political aspects most certainly have. Imagine being in possession of a pre-Columbus map that did not show the Americas correctly, now that would be a truly priceless antique. The technology involved in mapmaking is constantly improving but there is still a desire to own some of the earliest examples of...

The Two Jerusalems
According to the Tanakh, there were two locations called Jerusalem, one inhabited by the Amorites (Joshua 10:5), and the other inhabited by the Jebusites (Joshua 15:63; Judges 1:21). One in the mountains (Joshua 10:6) and the other surrounded by mountains (Psalm 125:2; Nehemiah 8:15). One the Children of Israel conquered when they entered the land of Israel (Judges 1:8) and the other was took by King David some 300 years later (2 Samuel 5:7; 1 Chronicles 11:5). One in the mount of Ephraim (Genesis 33:18; Genesis 14:18; Joshua 18:1; Judges 4:5;) and the other just north of Rimmon which is in the southern part of Judah (and the inheritance of Simeon- Joshua 19:7-8) (Zechariah 14:10; Joshua 15:21-32...
Lamps: History of Home Lighting
Lamps have been used to spread light since old ages, even before electricity was invented, and lighting was given a new meaning. The use of lamps can be broadly classified into two eras: The pre-electrical era and the post electrical era. The Pre-electrical Era The invention and first usage of lamp can be dated back to 70,000 BC. At that time, there was no metal or bronze to make lamps instead the then civilization used hollow rocks and shells. These hollow rocks were filled with moss and other natural substances and then soaked in animal fat. Animal fat acted as oil and this is how the first lamps were ignited. With the advent of pottery, and the bronze and copper age, humans started to make lamps...
Replacement For Model Trucks
I think anybody makes a replacement metal truck that just screws on and provides exact coupler height. I have replaced trucks but always had to do some work on the car, either cutting the pin off and re-drilling a hole and filling the existing hole with plastic spree or other filler's, then drilling and tapping the hole. I would have to sometimes shim the truck with washers to raise the car too the right height or on occasion cutting off some of the trucks pin to lower the car to the right height. You could also consider replacing the wheels with metal wheels on the existing trucks. It lists all the parts needed and the tools used. Some of the companies make replacement wheels, which are excellent...
TG Green Pottery
Back in 1846 Thomas Goodwin Green, son of a Lincolnshire corn merchant, had a fancy for a lady by the name of Mary Tenniel (sister of Sir John Tenniel the famous illustrator of such books as Alice in Wonderland). He asked her to marry him but was rejected. So in true romantic spirit, he took his broken heart and sailed for Australia, where he made his fortune as a builder. Fifteen years later he had word that Mary had changed her mind so he returned home in true prodigal fashion, wooed and won his sweetheart and they were married. Whilst on honeymoon, Green met Henry Wileman who owned the Pottery Works in Church Gresley, Derbyshire. Having sold up his business in Australia, Green was looking for...
Step Back in Time

An international team of experts has unveiled a 'virtual Rome' program, the worlds biggest and most complex computer simulation of what the ancient city was like in 320 AD, under the rule of Constantine. An era considered to be the most powerful peak Rome experienced during ancient times. The project, a culmination of ten years of work and a collaberation of experts in architecture, archaeology and computer programmers...
An Archaeological Look at Ceramic Pots
One of the indicators of early civilization is pottery. With people settling down in one centralized area and importing food from outlying farms, storage became a necessity. Woven containers of grass and reeds were most likely the first crafted vessels for dry goods, while the preserved stomaches of large grazing animals is good for liquid storage, but those all wear out very quickly. The practice of shaping mud with other materials and letting it harden in the sun to create building materials is a practice that helped keep humans out of the weather back in the stone age. A similar practice is still currently used by wasps, beavers and other such creatures. It's entirely possible that we learned it...
Baout China Blackpottery
As early as 8, 000 years ago, in the Neolithic Age, earthenware, primitive pottery, were invented and produced along the Yellow River and the Yangtze River, which has been proved true due to archeological findings. There were front-page discoveries. At the early stage of the Neolithic Age, potters had to make by hand. Clay was coiled into ropes and then carefully smoothed using a paddle on the exterior pressed against an anvil on the inside wall. Later till the primitive Yangshao Culture period, potter's wheel was invented, and kiln was bettered, the production of pottery made a leap. The representative pottery then was red earthenware decorated with black animal and geometric designs. During the...
