Classic Pottery Bookends From Famous Makers
Southeast Ohio was once the home of many famous pottery makers. Even today, names like Hull, McCoy and Robinson Ransbottom still echo through the Muskingum River Valley. Pottery bookends are among some of the most collectible pieces from these well known pottery makers. The area around the Muskingum River Valley provided the perfect combination of natural resources that included a ready source of fine grade clay. Often found along the seams of coal that dotted the subterranean landscape, the clay gave birth to over fifty pottery manufacturers. The abundance of coal provided a great source of energy to fuel the kilns that were needed to fire the clay. The fine quality of the clay found in and around...

Shar Pei Breed History: The Highlights
A Han dynasty pottery fragment shows a wrinkly dog that may be a Shar Pei. Although the origins are unclear, the Shar Pei seems to have descended from Chow Chows. Shar Peis became the "must have" dog of the 1980's because of their looks. However, their history shows they are bred to be aggressive attack dogs (being mostly aggressive to other dogs). A Hong Kong businessman rescued many Shar Peis and exported them to Western countries. However, due to health problems and a small gene pool, perhaps this breed should be left to history. The name Shar Pei roughly translates into English as sand-skin. The Shar Pei does have a rough skin and tough coat. Everything about this breed is tough - its...
Old Time Craft of Soap Making
Soap is simply fat (an acid) mixed with caustic soda (an alkali); mix them together and you have soap. The old time craft of making lye was very affective. One method of making their own caustic soda (alkali) was to hollow out a log and drill a lot of holes at the bottom. They than put a layer of gravel (for drainage), a layer of straw, a layer of hardwood ashes, and filled the log with rain water. It took a long time for this mixture to seep down and drain through the holes at the bottom. The slimy stuff that came out of the holes was homemade lye. The crude lye was than boiled down until the right consistency for making soap. Testing the lye strength for soap making was quite creative. The...

The History of Korean Pottery
The Koreans have used potteries from 7000 to 8000 years ago. Since ancient times they used to make pottery by firing clay at a heat of 1300 degree Celsius. They produced unique, original and beautiful pottery. They traded extensively with China and adopted manufacturing skills of Celadon. Korean pottery is healthy and alive due to its good natural disposition. The Korean potters believed in nature and sought to be a part of it. So they lived in deep recesses of mountains to give a natural touch to their wares and used simple colors with liberal techniques for molding the clay prior to making the pottery. Korean pottery can be studied in terms of three empires. These three empires which present the...
Ancient Ceramics
Ceramic Maker For hundreds of years ceramics have been created to express emotions, reflect the period and attitude, and provide functional uses. Although ceramics have evolved over these centuries and Arts and Crafts have evolved over the past century, most of the techniques and materials used to create ceramic pieces have not changed a lot. Unlike ancient ceramic pottery, beads or jewelry, having a stamp or initial of the maker, these findings had the actual finger prints of the very people who played a part in their creation. The question was what material could be used to safely create accurate castings and not cause any damage to the ancient ceramics. The first attempts utilized a silicone...

Josiah Wedgwood who was born in 1730 and died in 1795 came from a long line of potters, he himself was the 12th child of potter Thomas Wedgwood, whose own father and grand father were potters also. At the age of 6 Josiah would walk 7 miles to school every day as his mother was determined that he would have a good education, but at the age of 9 his father died and he left school to become an apprentice at the family business under his brother Thomas. Then at the age of 12 he contracted smallpox's which unfortunately led to him being confined to his bed for months and during this time he spent a lot of it reading and improving his mind. Due to the smallpox Josiah was left with a weakened knee and...
Polish Pottery
"I'm too young to be collecting dishes!" Yes, these famous last words came out of my mouth shortly after moving to Germany. I'd see the stuff everywhere - decorating the walls at a friend's house, overflowing with food at a potluck gathering, being sold by at a booth outside the post store. And don't forget each and every shopping bazaar - the table surrounded by a frenzy of ladies was sure to have a well-stocked selection from Poland or Italy. I resisted its tempting allure for the first couple of years and believe it or not, my husband caved first. I was engrossed in a pile of carved wooden boxes as my husband explored the pottery table nearby. Then, he uttered those nine little words that he's...
The Evolution of Savile, Interludes And Anecdotes
If you would like to learn a little about the evolution of Savile Row Tailors and what is today the most famous sartorial precinct in the world, then we have included a few facts. Plus interludes on British Fashion designers, silk neckties and cufflinks 1623: Piccadilly Hall, the country home of Strand tailor Robert Baker and the origin of one of London's most celebrated place names, is first recorded on the site of today's Great Windmill Street in Soho. Baker's tailoring shop sold pickadils or pickadillos: ruffs fashionable in the Jacobean era hence the (possibly ironic) name given to his house. When King James I married Elizabeth of Bohemia in 1613, collars recorded in the bride's trousseau were...

The Psychology of Dreams-the Unique Interpretation That Can be Verified in your Daily
There are thousands of dream interpreters in this world, but none of them can prove that you can absolutely trust their method of dream translation even before they start translating the messages. Dream interpretation is somewhat like astrology. Some people believe that there is a meaning in these sciences, while others don't even consider them as sciences that should be respected and seriously examined by everyone. This happens mainly because the several dream interpretation methods that exist don't really translate the dream's meaning exactly as it is and because the materialist mentality of our civilization despises what it cannot understand or explain. The translation from one language to the...

Kuelap, the Fortress of the Clouds
Kuelap is an ancient and truly magnificent structure. The only place that can really compare to its size, mystery and grandeur is the Sanctuary of MachuPicchu, but even then, Kuelap is at least twice as old and quite a bit bigger- it is estimated to contain 3 times more material than Egypt's largest pyramid! It was built by the Chachapoyas (meaning the warriors of the clouds), which was what the Inkas called these people (the name they used to refer to themselves is unknown). Very little is currently known of this culture and since the Incas and the Spanish conquistadors were the principal sources of information on the Chachapoyas, unbiased, first-hand information of this indigenous culture remains...
Jonathan Adler Porcelains in Etabletop.com
Jonathan Adler is a happy home store with a quirky, kitschy inventory ranging from playfully chic pottery to chipendale Chinese chairs. But what we absolutely adore about the shop is the huge selection of totally fab throw pillows, which come in a variety of bold, graphic patterns and customizable colors. The pillows range in price from affordable to expensive depending on the textiles and craftsmanship used (think silk-screened canvas, hand loomed wool, needlepoint, or hand embroidered linen), whereas most other items hit the moderately-pricey mark. (But you can still find great hostess knickknacks on any budget.) Now, although we lurrrve Jonathan Adler's two Manhattan stores (one in SoHo and one...

Rocking The Vote In 2008
The story arc of Shades of Darkness, Shades of Grace covers five years and three elections. Set in Minnesota, home to the nation's highest voter turn-out, the Pierson family understands that voting is not a right but a privilege, and one they exercise regularly. With 2008 a presidential election year, readers of the novel might view Minnesota as an example for the rest of the country to follow. Nationally between 1960 and 2004, voter participation in presidential election years declined from 63.1% in 1960 to 55.3% in 2004. There were encouraging blips, as percentages rose between 2000 and 2004, from 51.3% to 55.3%. Still, that pales in comparison to Minnesota where a whooping 76.8% of the population...
Modern Uses For Ceramics
We commonly think of ceramics as art objects and decorations. But ceramics really are diverse pieces of multi-purpose material that are made from burning formed pieces of pottery. This shaped clay started out many years ago being hand-formed and was eventually made with a wheel to iron out any fingerprints or major imperfections. Handmade ceramic is still made as an art form today, even though it is no longer the industry standard for making objects. As a beginner you would learn to mold, glaze and trim the clay to form objects. Uniquely painted, polished and decorated ceramic is always sought after. Developing your own style will come from practice and experimentation. Most ceramic materials...

Why Craft?
"Oh, I'm not very creative," is the complaint of many individuals when approached about starting up a craft. The truth is that everyone is creative. Some of us just got the notion in third grade that since we weren't the best artist in the class that we weren't "the creative type." The Creative Type: a mysterious individual with messy hair and outrageous attire who frequents museums and the theatre and mutters tirelessly to him/ herself when in public. As legendary as Santa Claus-and just as fictional. Real creativity manifests itself in a myriad of different ways. Creativity is that urge that makes you want to move the furniture around, for the third time this week. Creativity is the calm that...

Tuscany is home to the town of Lucca, an exquisite example of Romanesque architecture displayed in all of its glory throughout the town. The cathedrals of San Michele and San Martino are two of the best examples of the Romanesque architecture to be seen in Lucca, or all of Northern Italy for that. Lucca sits near the Serchio River, about 30 kilometers from Pisa and 80 kilometers from Florence. The town itself rests on a plateau under the watchful gaze of the Apuane Alps. The medieval walls, thick and strong, built in the sixteenth century still surround the town and the walkways present on the top of the walls offer an enjoyable opportunity for biking or walking to nearby sights. The town is full of...

Wine is an Age Old Art, a Modern Day Science and a Global Business
Wine making has been carried out in one form or another for thousands of years with pottery jars found in Persia (present day Iran) dating as far back as 5,500 BC displaying evidence of grapes use for winemaking. Additionally, jars from Jiahu in China dated to somewhere between 6000 and 7000 BC have also been found containing wine made from wild grapes. But whether we are considering ancient or modern wine making, a number of the same conditions apply and similar techniques are used because the chemistry of the grape is an everlasting quality. With a few notable exceptions the grapes used in wine making grow only only between latitudes 30-50 degrees North and 30-45 degrees South of the equator. As...
Lardo di Colonnata : A Tuscan Delicacy
Pork is a staple food of the mountain regions of northern Italy, where it's often said that a well butchered pig should leave 'nothing but the oink' behind. As a pig is typically around 30% fat, thrifty locals had to come up with a way to use and preserve this valuable source of protein, and the result is Lardo. Lardo di Colonnata, to give it its full name, is a delicacy produced from pork fat in and around the Tuscan mountain town of Colonnata. Happily for fans of cured meat, it's not only a frugal way of preserving pork fat over winter - it's delicious too! It's made in large vats known as conche, fashioned from marble quarried at the nearby 'white mountain' of Cararra, which are first liberally...
Tuscan Wanderways - Walking in and Around Florence
TUSCAN WANDERWAYS FIESOLE - MONTECECERI - SETTIGNANO Before setting out, the best way to interpret your wanderway from Fiesole up to Montececeri and over to Settignano, is to observe it from afar. Take a bus up to Piazzale Michelangelo, one of the most frequented landmarks of the city. From the front balustrade of the Piazzale, look down over the river Arno to the cupola of the Cathedral, and then directly up to the horizon. Fiesole crowns the hilltop in the distance, and beside it, to your right, is Montececeri. It was from this platform that the "first human flight" was attempted following the drawings of Leonardo da Vinci. Facing the river, walk to the left and round the balustrade until you come...

They had been entertained royally by the Duke and Duchess of Gubbio. There had been a salmon terrine, followed by boiled meats, suffed chicken and delicious sauces. Not to mention the sweets- one was a fascinating mix of pasta and almond sauce and cooked in a pastry case. She had had two...

A Tuscan State Of Mind
Sometimes traveling isn't just about going to a destination; it's a state of mind. Physically, I've been trapped in South Carolina for seven months now while mentally I try and put myself back in my favorite European places. One of my very favorites is the Tuscany region of Italy. While the city in South Carolina is a blistering desert of concrete, Tuscany radiates a rejuvenating warmth that washes over you like the rolling green of the hills. Since I'm currently unable to experience the area in person, I can only do what I can to substitute the experience. CDs full of pictures taken during my travels bring back stifled laughs and fond memories. The coffee table books I've collected over the years...

Larnaka West Coast - Cyprus
The octagonal mosque, built in 1816, is considered the finest example of Ottoman architecture in Cyprus. the Tekke and its grounds have been completely renovated. In winter, the Salt Lake, which is one of the two main wetlands in Cyprus, is home to colonies of flamingos and other migratory birds.
