Michael Ricci was weeding the Tea House garden when I arrived for our interview. You are technically helpless in some ways when it comes to gelding. You are at the mercy of your gold supplier. Preparations of gold emulsions used in ceramic decorating are prepared in secret. Any technical problems relating to the emulsions used must be resolved by the gold vender. Also, the emulsion suppliers often adjust emulsions to resolve problems not caused by regularly used emulsion formulations.Gold and other precious metal emulsions are used in the ceramic industry to add value to a product. This is usually in the form of banding or hand painting. Banding can be by hand or by machine. On firing, the gold must sink to the proper extent. It is called soft if it easily abrades off with a...

India ranks second on the basis of population in the world. Agricultural land utilised by the burgeoning population, the cultivable land resource is shrinking day by day. To meet the food, fibre, fuel, fodder, and other needs of the growing population, the productivity of agricultural land has to be increased rationally. This requires the use of all resources judiciously. In India, the mineral gypsum is mostly used in the manufacture of cement, fertiliser, plaster of Paris, ceramics and distemper. Smaller quantity is used as soil conditioner, for carving and statuary purposes. India has huge resources of natural gypsum of the order of 1120 million tonnes, of which recoverable reserves are estimated...

Rhodes. One of Greece's many highlights, the island of Rhodes, has both incredible beauty and interesting history to share with its visitors. The largest of the Dodecanese island group, Rhodes has several beaches from which you can enjoy the sea. One is covered with small pebbles in place of sand, but the magnificence of the royal blue water is obvious regardless of the composition of the beach. Rhodes receives over 300 days of sunshine a year, which makes you appreciate the crisp coldness of the Aegean even more. After the fall and fragmentation of Alexander the Great's Empire of Macedonia, the island of Rhodes fought for its freedom and after a long siege, triumphed in 305 BC. The objects took us on a journey through the past, introducing us to a wide array of pottery, woodworking, sculpture, glass blowing and other crafts. How American Indians arrived and when they arrived in the United States is a topic that has long been up for debate. There are conflicting reports and theories on when American Indians arrived here and how they did. In any culture, people and animals pass on and belongings become ruined. This tends to make it difficult to understand and study a particular culture. A popular tradition in the history of American Indians has made it easier for their history to be examined.Pottery was a tradition that existed in the past and it continues to exist today. Pottery making has changed with time, but many American Indians have continued to carry on the tradition of making pottery in the same way that...

RELIGIOUS BELIEFSWhen we speak of religious beliefs we mean its theological tenets. Christianity and Islam share common ideas and beliefs having their roots in a common source--Judaism. This religion in turn derived many of its doctrines and beliefs from the Persians, Egyptians, Babylonians, Chaldeans, and the Sumerians. Perhaps it would be true to say that almost every religion is syncretic, though they may try very hard to cover this up.Eastern religions such as Buddhism and Taoism are more mystical in nature and differ greatly from the Semitic religions in many basic principles; Hinduism comprising of many philosophical schools of thought, embraces various theological ideas. Some schools of...

Advance: before the Inca, Chancay, Moche, and Chavin there was the Caral civilization, in the North-central coast of Peru, five thousand years ago (3000 BC)) all these civilizations lived in the Supe Valley at one time except the Moche, who lived in Chan Chan, bordering the coast. Caral, a city-state you might say, or perhaps a small sanctuary along the Supe Rio (of which were perhaps some 3000-inhabidents at one time)) of which I first crossed by foot, and came back by horse)), in the Supe Valley, is most bravura, for I have been there and can bear this out. This civilization coexisted with that of Mesopotamia of the Near East, or Crete of Europe; perhaps built their pyramids at the same time Egypt...

"We had built and finished our fort, which was triangle-wise, having three bulwarks at every corner like a half-moon," George Percy wrote several months after 104 English men and boys had disembarked on a swampy island on the James River in Virginia on May 13, 1607. That first year only 38 would survive diseases, brackish water, Indian raids and starvation, never imagining they had founded a new nation or that 400 years later their achievement would be celebrated in a series of concerts, exhibitions and new attractions in Virginia under the banner, "Jamestown 2007."As the English settlers were sailing toward the New World, the wildly erratic and wildly talented artist Caravaggio had just killed an...

Have you ever had someone try to persuade you with those old, outdated, offensive tactics? You know the ones I am talking about. Before you are even close to purchasing a product I am sure that you have been asked: "Do you want it in green or black?" I am sure you have also heard: "If I could show you how to become financially independent, you'd be interested wouldn't you?" This backs you into a corner and you don't even want to answer the question. You wonder, does this person really think I'm that dumb? You don't buy from these people. You don't even like these people. You never go back to their store. Do these tactics still work? Sure they do. It is the law of averages. Eventually you...

Reproduction. In most mid-century American collectible pottery circles, the word reproduction draws immediate, passionate responses, usually negative. A quick read of posts on the larger cookie jar collector forums will reveal a loathing of ceramic reproductions that has no parallel in any other area of art. However, most of those who express the strongest feelings about reproduction pottery are using the word "reproduction" when they really mean, "counterfeit". A counterfeit is a reproduction deliberately mismarked for the sole purpose of confusing the prospective buyer into believing it was made by the original company.Properly, permanently marked, reproductions pose no threat to collectible...

"It's a Hallmark holiday" claim the skeptics. You need a card, a present, a meal in a restaurant. You're obliged to spend, spend, spend. But Valentine's Day precedes consumerism, corporations, greeting cards, civilisation and even Christianity. It is an expression of what it is to be human. While every day pressures squeeze the romance out of life, Valentine's day is an island of corny indulgence in a giant sea of cynicism. One early attempt at valentine romance, saw me commit several days to preparation. Roses, a three course meal, as exotic as a slightly green eighteen year old could muster and on top of that a singing waiter (an extroverted mate dressed up) to serve the food.In retrospect the...

Cutting-Edge Art

Art glass usually refers to the modern art glass movement in which individual artists work alone or with colleagues, creating works from molten glass in relatively small furnaces of a few hundred pounds of glass. It began in the early 1960s and showed an incremental growth through the end of the century. The glass objects created are not primarily utilitarian. From a creative perspective, they have to make an artistic statement. Their market value depends on the work and the artist involved, and prices range from a few hundred to tens of thousands of dollars. The best known of the modern glass artists is Dale Chihuly. In 1971, he began the Pilchuck School of Glass near Stanwood, Washington, which is...

Lets first understand that an oil painting differs from the any other paint form in the technique and material used to make the paint itself. As we are all aware of the fact, that to erect an amazing skyscraper and to neglect the integrity of the foundation would be foolhardy. Most certainly the technique is not a steadfast rule that is applicable to make paintings. Merely a guide to get going towards a method the individual artists could conform to, making a style of their own.The basic framework follows the following steps:1. Preparing the canvas.2. Making the right blend of paint material.3. Making the Under Painting.4. Glazing...

Why Double Glazing?

Why replace your single-glazed windows with double glazing ? For most, the precipitating factor for looking into double glazing is a need for new construction (or renovation) to conform to modern energy standards. Others decide to replace their windows as an energy saving measure. The main advantage that double glazing offers over traditional windows is insulation. Because nearly 25% of your heat is lost through your windows, well-made and well-fitted double glazing can reduce your heating costs by as much as half depending on the amount of glass in your home. Some of the things to consider when shopping for double glazing for your home are safety, energy conservation, style, type of frame, type of...

It is easy to keep a brush clean for many years with simple regular maintenance. The most effective way to keep and clean brushes is by using a mild soap. There are some brush cleaners made especially for cleaning brushed but they can be expensive and are used up very quickly. Brush cleaners are very good for those really hard to clean brushes or for a periodical cleaning if you want to recondition your brushes. Using 100% pure soap, in bar form is probably the easiest method and if you use chemical products that require chemical clean up, then do so first. These chemicals are especially harmful to brushes. Begin by cleaning the brush thoroughly with the required cleaner. Wet the bar of soap...
